Bursas are the small water balloon-like structures that sit around joints to reduce friction between muscle and bone while a joint moves. Bursitis is the painful inflammation of these structures, caused by over-use, friction, trauma, or irritation of the other structures that are close by. This condition is usually secondary to another issue such as tendinopathy, which arises from repetitive movements, prolonged pressure on a joint, or an acute injury. Bursitis commonly affects areas such as the shoulder, hip, and knee, leading to pain, swelling, and restricted movement.
